Year 9 PE
What students learn:
At Bullers Wood School for Boys, we are committed to a ‘PE for all’ ethos. Our curriculum enables students to develop their technique and performance across a broad range of sports, building deepened knowledge and skill as they progress through each year and key stage.
Alongside physical competency, students also develop a wide range of holistic skills, using sport as the vehicle for cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth. These include problem-solving, communication, creativity, self-awareness, empathy, teamwork, and resilience.
Our aim is to ensure every student is equipped not only to succeed in sport, but to thrive as confident, well-rounded individuals.

How learning and progress are checked
Teaching approach:
At Bullers Wood School for Boys, learning and progress in PE are monitored through a holistic framework that recognises achievement in all areas of a student’s development—not just physical performance. Our approach ensures that every student can demonstrate success, regardless of their sporting ability. Through ongoing teacher observations Teachers continuously assess students during lessons, focusing on:
- Technical skill development such as technique, accuracy, control
- Application of tactics and strategies in competitive and conditioned practices
- Physical attributes such as fitness, movement quality, and work rate
- Holistic behaviours, including teamwork, communication, resilience, and self-management
This allows teachers to give immediate, actionable feedback to move learning forward.
Homework and Independent study:
At Key Stage 3, homework is not routinely set in PE because our curriculum is designed to prioritise active participation, physical development, and personal growth during lesson time. PE is unique in that the core learning takes place through practical, movement-based experiences, which cannot be meaningfully replicated at home for all students.
Although formal homework isn’t set, students are always encouraged to:
- stay active outside school hours
- take part in clubs and teams
- practice skills independently if they choose
- build healthy habits beyond the curriculum
These are promoted informally, without being compulsory for homework.
How parents and carers can support:
Parents and carers play a key role in helping students get the most out of their PE lessons. Support at home does not need to be complicated—small; consistent habits can make a significant difference to a child’s confidence, engagement, and overall wellbeing.
- Encourage regular physical activity
- Ensure students have the correct kit and it is clearly labelled
- Promote a positive attitude towards PE
- Support healthy routines
- Encourage independence and responsibility
- Communicate when needed (such as an injury)
- Engage with school events and opportunities
Support, stretch and enrichment:
Support for students who need extra help:
We are committed to ensuring that every student can succeed in PE, regardless of their starting point, confidence level, or physical ability. Our approach combines inclusive practice, differentiated tasks, and personalised support to help all learners feel safe, supported, and able to make progress.
Stretch & challenge:
Stretch and challenge in PE is not limited to increasing physical difficulty—it is about deepening thinking, developing tactical intelligence, enhancing personal qualities, and pushing students towards their own highest level of performance. We provide challenges across all four strands of the Me in PE holistic framework to ensure that every learner is extended appropriately.
Clubs / trips / extra opportunities:
At Bullers Wood School for Boys, PE extends beyond the classroom to offer a wide range of clubs, trips, and enrichment opportunities. These experiences are designed to develop students’ physical skills, teamwork, leadership, and personal confidence, while fostering a lifelong love of physical activity.
