Bullers Wood School For Boys

Year 8 PE

What students learn:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, we are committed to a ‘PE for all’ ethos. In Year 8, students build on the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in Year 7, applying them with increasing consistency, independence, and tactical awareness across a broad range of sports.

Our curriculum enables students to refine their technique, improve their performance and develop a deeper understanding of how and when to apply skills, tactics, and strategies. Students are encouraged to make increasingly effective decisions, solve problems, and adapt their performance to different situations.

Alongside physical competency, students continue to develop a wide range of holistic skills, using sport as a vehicle for cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth. These include problem-solving, communication, creativity, self-awareness, empathy, teamwork, leadership, and resilience.

Our aim is to ensure that every student continues to make meaningful progress from their individual starting point, developing the confidence, knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to participate successfully in physical activity and thrive as a well-rounded individual.

How learning and progress are checked

Teaching approach:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, learning and progress in PE are monitored through a holistic framework that recognises achievement across all areas of a student’s development, not just physical performance. Our approach ensures that every student can demonstrate meaningful progress, regardless of their sporting ability or starting point.

Through ongoing observation and assessment, teachers focus on:

  • Technical skill development – technique, accuracy, control, consistency, and refinement
  • Application of tactics and strategies – decision-making and the effective application and adaptation of skills in competitive and conditioned practices
  • Physical development – fitness, movement quality, effort, and work rate
  • Personal and social development – teamwork, communication, resilience, confidence, leadership, and self-management
  • Independence and evaluation – students' ability to recognise strengths, identify areas for improvement and make appropriate adjustments to their performance

As students' progress through Year 8, there is an increasing emphasis on applying skills independently, adapting to different situations and explaining the decisions they make.

Teachers use ongoing assessment to provide immediate and actionable feedback, helping students understand how to improve and move their learning forward.

Homework and Independent study:

At Key Stage 3, homework is not routinely set in PE. Our curriculum prioritises active participation, physical development, and personal growth during lesson time. PE is unique in that much of the learning takes place through practical, movement-based experiences that cannot be meaningfully replicated at home for all students.

Although formal homework is not routinely set, students are encouraged to:

  • Stay active outside of school
  • Participate in clubs, teams, and other physical activities
  • Practise and refine skills independently where appropriate
  • Develop healthy and active habits beyond the curriculum
  • Reflect on their own performance and identify ways to improve

These opportunities are encouraged rather than compulsory, supporting students to develop independence and a lifelong relationship with physical activity.

How parents and carers can support:

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping students get the most from their PE experience. Small, consistent habits can make a significant difference to confidence, engagement, and overall wellbeing.

Parents and carers can support by:

  • Encouraging regular physical activity
  • Ensuring students have the correct PE kit, clearly labelled
  • Promoting a positive attitude towards PE and physical activity
  • Supporting healthy routines
  • Encouraging independence and personal responsibility
  • Encouraging students to participate in clubs, teams, and other physical activity opportunities
  • Communicating with the school, when necessary, such as informing us about injuries or relevant circumstances
  • Engaging with school sporting events, trips, and enrichment opportunities

Support, stretch and enrichment:

Support for students who need extra help:

We are committed to ensuring that every student can succeed in PE, regardless of their starting point, confidence, or physical ability.

Our inclusive approach combines differentiated tasks, appropriate challenge and personalised support to ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and able to make progress. Teachers adapt activities, equipment, rules, and groupings where appropriate to remove barriers and enable meaningful participation.

Stretch & challenge:

Stretch and challenge in PE is not limited to increasing physical difficulty. It is about deepening thinking, developing tactical intelligence, improving decision-making, and strengthening personal qualities.

As students' progress through Year 8, they are increasingly challenged to:

  • Apply and adapt skills in different situations
  • Make independent tactical decisions
  • Solve problems and respond to changing situations
  • Evaluate and improve their own and others' performance
  • Take greater responsibility for their learning and performance

Challenges are provided across all four strands of our Me in PE holistic framework, ensuring that every learner is appropriately extended.

Clubs / trips / extra opportunities:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, PE extends beyond the classroom through a wide range of clubs, fixtures, trips, and enrichment opportunities.

These experiences provide students with opportunities to develop physical skills, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and confidence. They also encourage students to become more independent, take on new challenges, and develop a lifelong love of physical activity.
