Bullers Wood School For Boys

Year 7 PE

What students learn:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, we are committed to a ‘PE for all’ ethos. Our curriculum enables students to develop their technique, performance and understanding across a broad range of sports, building knowledge and skills progressively as they move through each year and key stage.

Alongside physical competency, students develop a wide range of holistic skills, using sport as a vehicle for cognitive, emotional, social, and physical growth. These include problem-solving, communication, creativity, self-awareness, empathy, teamwork, and resilience.

Our aim is to ensure every student is equipped not only to participate and succeed in physical activity, but also to thrive as confident, capable, and well-rounded individuals.

How learning and progress are checked

Teaching approach:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, learning and progress in PE are monitored through a holistic framework that recognises achievement across all areas of a student’s development, not just physical performance. This ensures that every student has opportunities to demonstrate success, regardless of their sporting ability or starting point.

Through ongoing observation and assessment, teachers focus on:

  • Technical skill development – technique, accuracy, control, and consistency
  • Application of tactics and strategies – decision-making and the application of skills in competitive and conditioned practices
  • Physical development – fitness, movement quality, effort, and work rate
  • Personal and social development – teamwork, communication, resilience, confidence, and self-management

Teachers use this ongoing assessment to provide immediate and actionable feedback, helping students understand how to improve and move their learning forward.

Homework and Independent study:

At Key Stage 3, homework is not routinely set in PE. Our curriculum prioritises active participation, physical development, and personal growth during lesson time. PE is unique in that much of the learning takes place through practical, movement-based experiences that cannot be meaningfully replicated at home for all students.

Although formal homework is not routinely set, students are encouraged to:

  • Stay active outside of school
  • Participate in clubs, teams, and other physical activities
  • Practise and refine skills independently where appropriate
  • Develop healthy and active habits beyond the curriculum

These opportunities are encouraged rather than compulsory, supporting students to develop a lifelong relationship with physical activity.

How parents and carers can support:

Parents and carers play a key role in helping students get the most from their PE experience. Small, consistent habits can make a significant difference to confidence, engagement, and wellbeing.

Parents and carers can support by:

  • Encouraging regular physical activity
  • Ensuring students have the correct PE kit, clearly labelled
  • Promoting a positive attitude towards PE and physical activity
  • Supporting healthy routines, including sleep, nutrition, and hydration
  • Encouraging independence and responsibility
  • Communicating with the school, when necessary, such as informing us about injuries or relevant circumstances
  • Engaging with school sporting events, clubs, and other opportunities

Support, stretch and enrichment:

Support for students who need extra help:

We are committed to ensuring that every student can succeed in PE, regardless of their starting point, confidence, or physical ability.

Our inclusive approach combines differentiated tasks, appropriate challenge and personalised support to ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and able to make progress. Teachers adapt activities, equipment, rules, and groupings where appropriate to remove barriers and enable meaningful participation.

Stretch & challenge:

Stretch and challenge in PE is not limited to increasing physical difficulty. It also involves deepening thinking, developing tactical intelligence, improving decision-making, and strengthening personal qualities.

Students are challenged across all areas of our Me in PE holistic framework, allowing them to develop their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills and work towards their own highest level of performance

Clubs / trips / extra opportunities:

At Bullers Wood School for Boys, PE extends beyond the classroom through a wide range of clubs, fixtures, trips, and enrichment opportunities.

These experiences provide students with opportunities to develop physical skills, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and confidence, while encouraging participation and helping to foster a lifelong love of physical activity.
