Level 2 Certificate Further Mathematics
Course overview
Further Mathematics is an optional qualification offered to students who demonstrate strong aptitude and enthusiasm for mathematics. It is designed to stretch and challenge high-attaining students and to support progression to A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
Students who achieve a grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics at the end of Year 10 may be invited to sit the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics, alongside their GCSE Mathematics studies in Year 11.
Course content
The Further Mathematics course builds on GCSE Mathematics and includes topics such as:
- Algebraic manipulation and proof
- Functions and graphs
- Coordinate geometry
- Matrices
- Trigonometry
- Introductory calculus (differentiation)
The course places a strong emphasis on algebraic reasoning and problem-solving, with questions designed to challenge students' mathematical thinking and resilience.

Exam Structure
Students are assessed through two written examination papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes in length.
Both papers are calculator papers and are taken at the end of Year 11.
