Key Stage 4 Core PE
Course overview
Core PE is compulsory for all students and is an important part of the curriculum through to the end of Year 11. Unlike GCSE PE, it is not an examination course. Its purpose is to give every student regular opportunity to be physically active, develop their physical competence and build the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes needed to lead an active and healthy life.
At Bullers Wood School for Boys, Core PE is built around our ‘PE for all’ ethos. We recognise that students have different interests, experiences, abilities and levels of confidence, and our curriculum provides opportunities for all students to experience success and make progress from their individual starting points.
Through a broad range of individual and team activities, students develop:
- Physical skills and competence – improving technique, coordination, movement, and fitness
- Cognitive skills – developing decision-making, problem-solving, tactical awareness, and understanding
- Social skills – communication, cooperation, teamwork, and leadership
- Emotional development – confidence, resilience, self-awareness and managing success and challenge
- Health and fitness – understanding the importance of regular physical activity and developing healthy, active habits
Core PE also provides students with opportunities to try new activities, develop existing interests and participate at diverse levels, whether that is recreationally, competitively, or simply for enjoyment.
As students' progress through Key Stage 4, there is an increasing emphasis on independence and lifelong participation. Students are encouraged to understand how physical activity can support their physical health, mental wellbeing, social development, and quality of life beyond school.
Core PE is therefore not simply preparation for sport or competition. It uses physical activity and sport as a vehicle for wider personal development, helping students to become confident, resilient, responsible, and well-rounded individuals.
